Anthology of the first edition of two early and extremely rare texts by the Jesuit Nicolas Trigault (1577 – 1628) on the missionisation of Japan and China. The author was mainly active in Nanjing, Hangzhou and Beijing and is considered to have been one of the most significant missionaries in this region. With the help of a converted Chinese he also published the first Chinese version of Aesop’s fables. — Contemporary leather binding with Spanish edges. Includes the folding plate “Palatii suburbani ichnographia a rege Sinarum Soc: Iesu attributi Pequini anno 1610”. Ex-library book with stamp inside and catalogue no. on spine. Binding slightly rubbed and bumped. Clasps missing. 1 leaf loosened, folding plate torn in several places. Otherwise still in very good condition, binding tight.
